Workshops Nov 6, 13, 20, 27 (7pm-9pm) This 4-week workshop will use loop-based software music sequencer "Ableton Live" to understand the connection of nature and music. We will learn a series of audio manipulation techniques to create sonic landscapes. We will start with acoustic sound and learn ways in which electronic processing can be used to expand, change, and re-create sound. We will listen to and process field recordings to explore the places they are able to evoke. We will be introduced to computer-generated rhythmic and textural material to broaden our sound world. We will explore and discuss naturally occurring acoustic phenomena and its applications in music. We will listen to bird songs, listen to music, and read about nature & technology. Participants will gain basic knowledge of "Ableton Live", as well as expand their concepts of sound, music, space, place, silence and nature. Bring some sonic material to create your own personal sonic landscape. All levels welcome.
Oct 3, 10, 17, 24 (7pm-9pm) This 4-week singing workshop will work with breathing and singing exercises to free and strengthen the voice. By grounding ourselves and connecting to the whole body, we will explore the vocal timbre and range, undo hindering vocal habits, and develop a loving non-judgmental singing practice. Based on the practices of yoga and tai-chi, we will experience mind/body awareness and breath control techniques. We will also discuss the body mechanics of voice production and learn tools for a more aligned posture and present mind. Participants will work with toning and visualization to expand the resonance, color, and flexibility of each individual voice. We will use "sound showers", collective improvisations and other fun tools to cultivate self-confidence, free the voice and rediscover the joy of singing. Ultimately, we will deepen our connection to ourselves and our community through sounding. Beginners, amateurs and professional singers are equally welcome.
Nov 3 & Feb 3 (3pm-5pm) TaKeTiNa is a group process that allows access to the body's innate rhythmic knowledge, conveying rhythm in a natural and organic manner. Participants are guided into the experience of rhythm archetypes - a matrix which constitutes the underlying structure of all music- through vocalization, clapping, and stepping. In other words, the students gain direct access to the rhythmic worlds of Africa, Asia, and Latin America by using the body itself as the main instrument. Zorina Wolf is an advanced teacher of TaKeTiNa and a drum and percussion instructor. Wolf has been playing the drum for over 16 years and teaching half that time.Through the mentoring of the late African drum master Babatunde Olatunji, she discovered the importance of fostering drum communities based on cooperative teaching and learning.
Nov 10-11 & Feb 16-17 (Sat 2pm-4:30pm; Sun 2pm-5pm) This 2-day intensive workshop will use a variety of sound games, visualization techniques, listening and channeling exercises to weave a fabric -both social and sonic- through which we can improvise collectively . We will work directly with the individual members of the group using methods borrowed from the disciplines of Drama Therapy and Sound Healing to access sub-conscious and intuitive creative sources. The first day we will focus on vocal/bodily exercises which foster self-confidence, trust and a non-judgmental sense of community. The second day we will re-introduce ourselves to our instruments and use them as channels of often suppressed musical territories. We will finish the workshop sharing a Pot Luck.
Sept 20 & Jan 29 (7pm-9pm) Inspired by Pauline Olivero's practice of Deep Listening, we will explore our sonic environment and the nature of our relationship with it. Through consciously focusing attention upon the acts of hearing and listening, we will heighten our awareness and deepen the connection to ourselves and our environment. Be ready to make sound, listen to sound, imagine sound and remember sound, while we remove perception layers. Through this process we will get familiar with some of the powerful ways in which listening helps us be more present, connected and free. |
